Rule 10 Not much is as easy as it first looks
“How long will take for you to complete that report?” or “When can I have that by?”
STOP! Do not answer and make a commitment. Resist the temptation to look at the best case scenario!
What is actually involved in order to complete it? Who needs to be involved in helping to do it?
Who doesn’t need to be involved, but wants to be, and might have their nose put out if they aren’t involved? What equipment and resources are required and available to do it? What else within the team, or outside the team could influence our ability to do it? What could go wrong and how could this slow us down? And then, what do the people I know and trust say about the answers to these questions.
Now, I am in a position to begin to answer the original question.
Do you have 10 years experience or 1 year of experience 10 times over? Wisdom is the ability to stop and reflect, then either reinforce, repeat or improve on what you, or others, have seen work, or to modify what didn’t work, or both.
It takes a little bit of time, and lots of asking the “Why?” and “What...if?” questions. Questions such as: “Why are we doing this?” “Why do you say that?” “Why did that happen?” “Why do we need to do that?” “What if this happened, what could we do?” and “What would happen if that occurred?"
